Detroit is actually a very kid-friendly city. Although there are not as many things as, say, New York City or Toronto, there's plenty to do here. The downtown area at the base of Woodward around the Renaissance Center (where all the hotels are) is quite safe and walkable, as is the Midtown/Cass Corridor area near Wayne State University. Most of the main attractions in Detroit proper are going to be along Woodward Avenue. There's also a lot to do outside the city.

Things to do inside the city:

* Comerica Park and Ford Field are great venues for major-league baseball and football, respectively. I would recommend the former, however, if you're actually interested in rooting for the home team...

* The Detroit Science Center (5020 John R St) is always popular with children. Check their website to see current exhibitions. They have an IMAX theater and a planetarium. * Belle Isle Park is always fun in the summer and fall. * The newly-completed Riverwalk is great in pleasant weather. Also try the riverwalk across the Canadian border in neighboring Windsor.

Things to do a short drive from the city:

* The Detroit Zoo (8450 W. 10 Mile Rd, Royal Oak, MI) is great year-round. Be sure to check out the Arctic Ring of Life, the world's largest polar bear display area. The hummingbird and butterfly aviary is a wonderful experience for smaller children. * You shouldn't pass up The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village (20900 Oakwood Blvd, Dearborn, MI). Founded in 1929 by automobile pioneer Henry Ford, it is arguably one of the world's finest museums and living history attractions. There's really too many plusses to list here. Their motor vehicle collections are second to none. They have Abraham Lincoln's chair from Ford's Theater. You can take a ride on a steam locomotive or in a Model T! Thomas Edison's workshop was "re-assembled" here. They also have an IMAX theater and the ever-popular Ford Rouge Factory Tour, where you can watch an F-150 pickup as it goes down the assembly line. * The Cranbrook Science Center (39221 Woodward Ave, Bloomfield Hills, MI) is another great science and natural history museum.
