He died penniless and in considerable debt to friends and acquaintances who had lent him sums of money in his last years, as he often lived beyond his means. It is not true however, as is commonly stated, that he was buried in a 'pauper's grave' - he was simply buried with other bodies in an unmarked communal grave, as was common practice at the time.

Likely, poor.

Mozart made large sums of money from the proceeds from his concerts (between 1782-1785) which he performed alone and several with Joseph Hayden. Mozart and his family also lived a lavish lifestyle, with an expensive apartment, servants, his son was sent to Boarding School; and Mozart declined to save any of his income.

From 1786-1790, Mozart little operatic writing, and what he did write was unfinished. He mainly worked as a piano soloist. In 1787, he was given the part time position as Emperor Joseph II's Chamber Composer. Also, during this time, Austria was at war, and Mozart as well as, most composers, did not make public appearances, or very few. The aristocrats were no longer supplying large support for the music arts, as they had prior to the war.

As a result of his reduced income, Mozart moved his family from Vienna to the suburbs, and had to resign from his post as Emperor Joseph's Chamber Composer. He began to borrow large sums of money, to pay his living expenses.

In 1790-91, Mozart composed some of his best work, and was no longer borrowing money. In fact, he had started to repay some of his many debts.

Sadly, Mozart died in December of 1791, leaving his some of his debts behind. Subsequently, Constanze, Mozart's wife, was able to successfully petition the Emperor for a widow's pension. She organized a series of concerts of Mozart's music, along with the publication of many of her husband's works, which brought her security and likely made her well off.

Mozart had financial problems throughout his life. In despite of that, he used to follow a spendthrift lifestyle. He was buried in pauper's grave.

This riddle is asked backwards. It should read, "What does a rich man want, a poor man has, and if you eat it you will die?" The answer to that riddle is nothing. A rich person wants nothing, a poor person has nothing, and if you eat nothing, you will die. However, worded the way it is, food seems to be a more correct answer.
