Union Major General Benjamin Butler was a key part of Lieutenant General US Grant's 1864 Overland campaign. As the commander of the Army of the James, Butler was presented with numerous opportunities to seriously damage when he was faraway from General Lee's reach. Yet Butler could have moved to seriously menace the Army of Northern Virginia's rear, and possibly even capture his choice of Richmond or Petersburg. Clearly his success could have brought the war to an end before the end of 1864.Butler was a political appointee general. His faults were well known almost from the beginning of the US Civil War. His army of 34,000 troops landed on the coast of Virginia, however, his advances were repulsed by a much smaller Rebel force under General PT Beauregard. Even though at one point, Butler had managed to occupy Confederate entrenchments that at first were blocking his advance, he was not able to perform the tasks that Grant had assigned to him.
