The Western Counties of Virginia were not happy about Virginia seceding from the USA.
So they seceded from Virginia in 1863, at the height of the American Civil War.
It was a welcome gift to Lincoln of a new state loyal to the Union, and one down to the Confederates.
Ironically, the Eastern counties of West Virginia were not too happy, and considered seceding from West Virginia!
