No, at least not by design but they did send one out on a virtual (extreme high risk) mission profile heading a task force in what became known as the second battle(naval, not marine ground troops) of Okinawa. The Battleship Yamato wqas the flotilla leader, in effect flagship. The Yamato was the world"s largest Battleship with cannon of l8 inch caliber (Us Battleships used l6 Inch guns) but was sunk by heavy air attack with few survivors. amn accout of the battle was given int he book Japanese destroyer captin. the Destoryer captain commanded a light cruiser in this sortie. the book is a good one for a look a the pacific War from the Japanese side. the yamato had a gross tonnage of 80,000 again far suirpaszsing any Us battleships. Banzai!

How did the sino-japanese and russo-japanese wars spring out of japans new strength as a modernized nation?

The 1894 Sino War was an opportunity for the Japanese to use (try out) their new army & navy against a real enemy. Test them out, correct any shortcomings, improve their equipment, etc. The 1904 Russian War was the big test. Modern Russian battleships built under French designs against modern Japanese battleships built to British designs. This would also effect the European navies...what would be better...French designed battleships or British designed battleships? The Russo-Japanese War would prove which design was the best (it was the British designed battleships). The British launched HMS Dreadnought immediately after the war (based on lessons learned from the Russian/Japanese War). Dreadnought started a whole new naval arms race world wide, which ultimately led to WWI in 1914.

What was the US tactic for fighting the Japanese during World War 2?

On land, overwhelming firepower. At sea, overwhelming firepower. During the land battles, that tactic worked well, there was NO place for the Japanese to retreat to, on an island. At sea however, the Japanese had the overwhelming firepower and skill to use it. Only after the US out numbered the Japanese Navy in Aircraft Carriers, Airplanes, Battleships, Cruisers, Destroyers, and Submarines, did the US Navy overwhelm the Imperial Navy with firepower.
