Yes , and still do. A lot of rural white Americans also eat snapping turtles. They say each part of it has different tasting meat. Some like ham, some like beef etc. I have been offered some, but I'm not very gastronomically adventurous, though I did have a bite of rattlesnake once . Besides , I like turtles.

Turtles are notoriously filthy, and it takes a very high level of knowledge, skill, and work to properly clean them. As a result, turtles are eaten more often (but still not common) as a novelty/delicacy in southern restaurants by people across a wide social and racial spectrum, with a large number of those partaking being wealthy foodie tourists. There are small enclaves of rural exceptions, and they are roughly majority half white and half mixed ancestry, minority African or native descent.
