There were certainly economic factors that were taken into consideration regarding the secession of eleven states. But allot more was at stake. Two nations where there was once one weakened both sides. Also, among "Unionists" their was a strong desire to keep the nation united. If not so, other states might also leave in the future. Unionists wanted to keep the South more then they wanted slavery to end. The key to the problem was the failure of political leaders to compromise and also to understand the the future of the world and of the US would eventually dissolve the institution of slavery. The leaders involved were too short sighted.
