A certificate means that you have the minimal training in an area and they usually consist of classes that are strictly related to that field such as fire safety for a certificate in fire fighting. A diploma or degree consists of all of those classes plus electives of your choice usually in the arts and sciences. Obviously the certificate takes less time but the diploma or degree puts you in the position to further your education by going on to the next degree.
