Yes. They do. Invariably.

I have been working in the substance abuse arm of the criminal justice field for over a decade. But it didn't become clear to me how pervasive the trend of drunk drivers to run from accidents is until recently when I started to collect news stories of various tragic DUI incidents -- particularly fatal DUI crashes. These are posted at duiblotter.com

Why do they run? This is an excellent question. I submit it is related to the fight or flight response to fear. After crashing a car, fear sets in. There is no one to fight. Flight is the only remaining response.

This response become particularly prevalent in a case where there has been a serious injury or death to someone in another vehicle.

My best amateur analysis of that situation is that the drunk driver is instantaneously presented with visions of a drastically altered future for him/herself. It is a future that they reflexively reject. They know that to stay at the location is to acknowledge reality and accept the future that is rushing headlong toward them.

And so they run. They will drive away if the vehicle is capable. If not, they will run on foot -- as fast and as far as they are physically able. They run to seek another reality -- another future. They run, hoping that they will wake up, but they don't.

But another thing that I find as I review these cases is that they frequently do return to the scene of the crime. They do this once they can process what has happened and are mentally and emotionally prepared to start to walk through that future -- one step at a time.

Sometimes it's 20-30 minutes before they return. Sometimes 2-3 hours. A gradually increasing clarity of thought as the alcohol dissipates is probably a factor in that acceptance process.

I could go on ... however, much of the explanation would only be speculation on my part. But regardless of the psychological motivations, the fact is that drunk drivers most certainly do run from their own accidents with great regularity.

Because it's a preview. Microsoft tends to have their own generic drivers, and they don't want to give everything away for free, do they? There's a more recent edition of the preview OS. Don't know about that.

Should I pay for my kid's insurance?

No, you should make your teenager pay his or her own insurance if they get into quite a few accidents. Making them pay it on their own will hopefully make them learn to be more responsible and also drive better once they realize how high the insurance can be from getting into so many accidents even if the accidents aren't their fault.
