not really, now there is vast globalization so people dont really need to use it.
but we can see its impact on the regions it traveled through. maybe the village people who live along this area do use it but it is not a main method of trade (e.i. we have advanced our ways to transport ideas, culture, etc. by the internet and other technologies.) SO i dont think it is used for the some purpose as it was in past.
