In New York City there are 400 Truant Officers called Attendance Teachers. Attendance Teachers are assigned to work with school staff to follow up on student absentee reports with telephone calls and visits to students homes to inquire about the reasons for their absence. The New York City Police Department operates a truancy patrol team that detains truants who are caught on the streets during school hours and returns them to school.
