No, but you should exchange rings. It is tradition and so is important to the woman, regardless of what she says. You can buy a nice ring for not much money.

Answer

You do not need to exchange rings in order to get married. All you need to do is obtain a marriage license in your jurisdiction and then solemnize the marriage before any official who is authorized to perform marriages in your jurisdiction. Regarding rings, that's a personal choice that both men and women today are capable of deciding on their own before or after the marriage takes place.

If you are looking to ask for the Big question to your girlfriend it's the right time to buy an engagement ring and if you are already engaged with your beloved and are planning to get married then i think its the perfect time to look for a wedding band.

An engagement ring is a "token of love" whereas a wedding band is a promise to your fiancee for life long support and love.

It's a personal choice. Some people give engraved (or not) watches as engagement presents but it is convention for the girl to get a ring as her engagement promise. She is bound by law in most Western countries to return the ring if the engagement is broken as it forms part of the contractual agreement to marry.

The wedding ring is customary, certainly for the woman. In many countries both partners receive a ring.

Additional Notes:

Sometimes people just use the engagement ring as the wedding ring as well. Some engagement rings come with a matching wedding band. This is called a bridal or wedding set. Please see the Resources/links to see what a wedding set might look like. This ring can be worn with or without the matching wedding band.

The wedding "ring" you are referring to is the wedding band that both men and women wear daily after they are married to symbolize comittment and to display that they are married and unavailable.

Of course you buy rings for engagement and wedding rings when you get engaged and married. Significant others expect that you will be doing that. When are getting engaged, it is tradition that you buy high quality stones such as diamonds, rubies, emeralds, etc. Just something that says that they are worth it.

If you are married she should already have an engagement ring. You give her the engagement ring when you propose, before the wedding is even planned.

Do you give both wedding band and engagement ring at proposal?

Traditionally, when someone proposes marriage, they typically present an engagement ring rather than both an engagement ring and a wedding band. The engagement ring is given at the time of the proposal, symbolizing the commitment to marriage. It is worn on the ring finger of the left hand. The wedding band is exchanged during the wedding ceremony itself. Both partners typically exchange wedding bands as a symbol of their commitment to each other. The wedding band is often a simpler and more understated ring compared to the engagement ring. However, customs and preferences can vary, and some individuals choose to give both the engagement ring and wedding band at the time of the proposal. Others may opt for a bridal set, which includes both rings designed to complement each other. Ultimately, the choice depends on personal preferences and cultural or regional traditions.
