If you want to be an EMPLOYED reporter, your prospective employer may very well require you to take an exam... if you can't spell worth beans, for example, they'd probably rather have someone whose work isn't going to require quite so much correction.

You'll need to take court reporting classes at an accredited school. This generally takes 2.5 to 3 years. You then need to pass an exam to gain certification. You shoudl have at least a bachelors degree. This is a 4 year degree.

You need to get law school education first. You then need to take a Bar Exam in the state in which you want to practice. If you pass the exam, you can then be licensed to become a lawyer.
There is not a requirement to take the bar exam. You can complete your degree and search for employment. You cannot practice law, however, without passing the exam and/or being admitted to the bar.
