Yes. There is so much deception in the world - many people who are brought up in a religious or spiritual environment, or who get involved in drugs and/or eastern mysticism, become disillusioned with what they have been taught and either make up their own version of it, proclaim they have a new revelation in regards to it (often subtly of demonic influence - sometimes not so subtly), or make up something entirely different.
Only with a firm basis of trust in a real and living God can you truly discern the truth from deception - many people sincerily believe things that they have been tricked into trusting, and in turn deceive others.
