-- The earth and moon both orbit their "common center of mass" ... the point

between them where the pivot of the see-saw would have to be in order for

them to balance each other.

-- Since the earth's mass is about 80 times as much as the moon's mass, that

point has to be 80 times farther from the center of the moon than it is from the

center of the earth.

-- The result is that their "common center of mass" is actually inside the earth.

So if you're watching the pair from the outside and you're not measuring too

closely, you'd swear that the moon is going around the earth, and you wouldn't

notice that the earth is also slightly wiggling.

-- By the way ... People often ask "Does the moon orbit the sun or the earth ?"

That "common center of mass" of the earth-moon pair is actually the thing that's

in orbit around the sun, while the earth and moon are both circling around it.

Yes, the earth orbits the sun. It takes 365 days and a bit to complete one orbit, which is what determined the length of a year. The earth's orbit is circular, slightly elliptical. The earth also rotates on its axis, which is slightly tilted. This takes 24 hours, and determines what time of day it is.

Neither, actually. The sun is the center of our solar system, and the Earth revolves around it. Our moon actually revolves around the Earth, though, so they are ultimately both orbiting the sun. It's just that the moon also goes around the Earth.

Roughly speaking, the planets - including Earth - go around the Sun. To be precise, the Sun and all the planets go around the center of mass of the Solar System - but this center of mass is very close to the Sun, due to the Sun's large mass.
