When the Villistas came to their home, they sent the Mexican women away with the baby Johnnie, and took Maud hostage. The two men were taken hostage also, but were killed a day or two later. Maud was spared, and remained a hostage until after the raid on Columbus. The Mexican government used the return of Johnnie Wright to Maud Wright as a political news story to show their willingness to work with the Americans in bringing justice to the situation.
