Maybe too much chlorine bleaching out strips try diluting a sample to see if you can get colour in the strips , try half pool water half tap then quarter pool and three quarters tap if colours appear then you have too much chlorine, also check your pH is below 7.8 as above this chlorine doesn't work properly

How do you clear the water in a plaster pool when the chlorine level is 3.0 and the pH is 7.4?

I would try shocking the pool.I have run into this problem. a lot of times the pool becomes basically "chemically locked", and although the chlorine level will measure Okay, the free chlorine level is very low. ANSW:: More chlor and longer filter run time. Use a better grade of chlor. k

Why is the in ground pool chlorine registering as zero in spite of shocking it many times?

I'm having a similar problem - 2-3 days after shocking the pool and adding chlorine, the available free chlorine measures low or near zero. I've had the pool for 10 years and never had this problem before. I'm also getting excessive algae growth. I took water to a professional pool store and they analyzed the chemistry for me. Everything was fine EXCEPT I had high levels of nitrates. Nitrates are heavenly food for algae and the chlorine reacts rapidly with everything going on in the pool. I've been told to drain the pool and refill it. Apparently there is no other way to remove nitrates from the pool. I haven't done this yet, but it's on my schedule for this week. Good luck!

If you have a 25 thousand gallon cement pool and you are still getting spotty areas of algae on the sides of it even though you have shocked the pool twice how can you get rid of this problem?

shocking will not get rid of algae, algae feeds on phosphates so you'll have to get your phosphate level down to zero using a product a pool store sells to control this.good luck. Phosphates are only a big factor in Salt Pools, The areas with growth are not getting circulation to refresh the active chlorine. Or you are not shocking properly, If you are shocking with a chlorine base product you have to bring your chlorine levels up 10 times above current levels if you miss and only go 9.5 times is all it does is add more chloramines to your pool creating even a worse problem. I suggest using a Non Chlorine shock with it you add 1 lb for 10,000 and it always works without a bunch of calculations, and if you use to little it just works a little less plus you can swim in 20 Minutes.
