Hemingway uses the literary technique of "compression" in the dialog between the man and woman. The characters never quite say what they really think, and the reader has to work out the subject of their conversation from the context of what they actually do say.

"Hills Like White Elephants" revolves around a man and a woman (who are together) having a conversation at a train station. The conversation is about whether or not the woman should have a "procedure" or "operation." Symbolism is used throughout the short story, but it is never directly said what the operation actually is. However, there are clues and symbols that the procedure talked about is an abortion. The boyfriend is trying to convince her to have the abortion, while she is questioning the matter.
The train does not arrive during the story --> the baby will not arrive (Jig chooses the abortion)
The actually both have different views, the man sees her as a drinking friend, someone who he isn't emotionally attached to other than the fact they hang out a lot. The girls view is different because although she views him the same she also wants to make more out of it.

It is a pro-life story. By deciding to keep her baby, the woman chooses life, which is symbolized by the beautiful grain and trees, river, and mountains. This is a stark comparison to the brown and dry land which symbolizes abortion in the story.
