Why is a kiwifruit hairy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Kiwi fruits are hairy to keep the outside of the fruit good, while the inside is being developed. It helps protect insects from eating the inside because the hairs will stick to their legs causing them to try to detach themselves, which means they'll fly away forgettng what they were doing in the first place. The hairy coating is very rich in flavoniod antioxidants, which are very high in dietary fiber, causing them to have a mild laxative effect.

Can horses eat kiwi fruit?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Mine really enjoy pomegranate seeds. I'd hesitate to feed whole without further research - while the rind traditionally has been used medicinally for humans, considering the amounts horses could consume I'd want reassurance that the amount of tannins etc. would be ok. But the part we normally eat, no problem.

(Prior answer claimed horses only eat apples - they enjoy, and can safely consume, a wider variety of fruits than just apples, though those are the most traditional offering.)

User Avatar

Kiwifruit prefer summer better than most other seasons. When you are growing them make sure they are not near a lot of water in the winter.

Kiwifruit need a sunny location with wind protection. They do best in a warm protected location. The temperature they like the most is 80*. But they can grow in northern states.

Is it safe for an umbrella cockatoo to eat kiwifruit?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes but it is not good for a baby parakeet. If you feed a parakeet kiwi make sure to peel the kiwi first and cut it into small pieces that are consumable for the bird.

But I recommend bird seed that is good for parakeets to eat that you can find at your local pet store.
