Yes and yes. "dvi-d with hdcp" Here is my understanding of it all. First dvi-d means digital signal only. hdcp (HD) means High-definition (CP) means copy protected i.e. you can't record the signal. As for the other part of the question. Is it able to be viewed like a tv and do you need to subscribe to hd with your cable provider?" Yes but, you have to have a cable box with a DVI output connector. Or some newer DVD players have dvi output. You didn't say what the name of your cable service is so i don't know if you have to subscribe (pay that is ) for HDTV or not. I'm on Cox cable and get HDTV for free.

Yes. You also need HDMI cables to connect the two.
Almost all HD monitors have standard definition analog inputs as well as HD inputs. Therefore, any DVD player should be able to run with an HD monitor. Later DVD players are likely to have an HDMI port which is the standard HD input to all modern HD televisions. Just check the type of outputs on the DVD player and compare them against the inputs of the television. There is almost certain to be at least one connection that will be on both.
In order to get the full HD experience you need an HDMI cable to connect a DVD/VCR combo to an HDTV.
Any reputable combo player will be able to hook up to an HD TV.
