Often your computer at work will have bleeding edge hardware far surpassing what you have at home. Depending on your job function they may be the exact same computer or yours at home may be better. If you work in a data center then the hardware is different than what MOST people have at home but home users may easily purchase server hardware and have good reasons for doing so; think Hyper-V Servers.
Work computers can be the same as home computers. This is OK for small businesses. If you have to support lots of computers then many versions is a bad idea. The big manufacturers have business and home computer lines that have different goals and different product line life spans. The use of virtual machines or servers is not in the scope of the question.
