The hypothesis is that comets, which often pass by the sun and other large stars, could not have existed for millions of years because a major part of their composition is made up of ice which would break off and melt when ever it would pass by a star. Indeed, it is this process by which their tails are visible, the melted and broken off parts are "pushed" by the solar wind to create a tail. One professor who co-wrote a paper on the subject said that the maximum age of many comets would be in the tens to hundreds of thousands of years range.
However, this is simply confounded by the fact that a comet can pick up other material in the huge space of time it is nowhere near its primary. Additionally, the age of a comet has no relevance to the age of a planet; a new comet could be easily created by a piece of rock managing to escape the asteroid belts, or by being captured as it passed the sun. Thus, comets are not evidence at all when speaking about Earth's age.
