Humans build dams primarily for flood control and for the generation of power. As a side benefit they create lakes. Dams also can provide more workers and a better habitat for blad eagles during the winter.

Dams are what keep our cities from deadly floods. Dams keep the water from rain, lakes, rivers, etc. from getting to the city/town. They keep all the water behind itself so it doesn't rush down toward the city.

Depending on how strong the dam is, the more water it can hold behind it. If the dam is not built right or is not strong enough for the water, it could break, unleashing the water to the city. But no worries! Government fixes the dams every 3 months. So they are sturdy and can keep the cities safe.

The water can be used for irrigation, to service the needs of cities and towns or by it's controlled release to generate electricity.
