And not all genes code only one single protein, neither it is coded in a linear manner. A gene can make RNA from any of its (both) strand according to the sequence message and each frames (Inda sequence of 'ATGTCC', the first frame ATG=Methionine, if it start from second from TGT which give another amino acid for example). So in theory, there are 6 possible frames (3 frames from 5' to 3' and 3 others from 3' to 5' direction) for a given piece of DNA or so called gene.
Then we this long non coding introns, and gene splicing events which tangle a bit more to study them.
