Best Answer

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, has Geostationary Operational Satellites 22,300 miles above the Earth's equator. Since the satellite is rotating as fast as the Earth, it can constantly monitor weather systems and capture pictures.

What measurements are made by weather satellites?

Satellites take satellite pictures of the cloud cover, I don't think any other measurements are taken by satellites. You can do a lot with weather satellites, like looking into hurricanes. Other tools are used to take measurements with to determine the path or strength of a hurricane.

Is the higher the satellite from the earth the higher the resolution of the pictures taken by satellite?

Actually its not the altitude of the satellite but the resolution of the camera that is responsible for a high resolution imagery. In fact the better resolution imagery in Google Earth comes from aerial and street-level photography.

How are the pictures of earth taken from satelites different from those taken by astronauts orbiting above the earth?

High resolution satellites (e.g. those operated by commercial satellite companies like GeoEye or DigitalGlobe) are used to take pictures of Earth. These salllites continuously capture high resolution imagery then transmit it to a ground station for processing. The selection of pictures is automated and programmed into the satellite from the ground. Pictures taken by an astronaut could be taken from a hand-held digital camera. The astronaut in that cause manually focuses the camera on a point of interest and takes the picture. One process is automated by machine (with instructions from humans) and the other directly by a human.
