Actually its not the altitude of the satellite but the resolution of the camera that is responsible for a high resolution imagery.
In fact the better resolution imagery in Google Earth comes from aerial and street-level Photography.
Google Earth and Google Maps are great tools to view high-resolution satellite imagery of the Earth.
Satellite pictures are taken through the satellite and sent to Earth via satellite waves.

Satellite pictures of Earth are taken by a camera mounted on a satellite in orbit, high above Earth's atmosphere. They are transmitted wirelessly over satellite signals, much like satellite TV.
High resolution satellites (e.g. those operated by commercial satellite companies like GeoEye or DigitalGlobe) are used to take pictures of Earth. A lot of the imagery comes from aerial photographers mostly in airplanes with special high resolution cameras. Some of the imagery even comes from kites and balloons.
A satellite photograph is a photograph or image taken by earth orbiting satellite with special high resolution cameras. The GeoEye-1 satellite has the highest resolution of any commercial imaging system and is able to collect images of the Earth with a ground resolution of 0.41 meters (or 16 inches) in the panchromatic or black and white mode.

The pictures were taken by a satellite which can photograph a large area.
High resolution satellites (e.g. those operated by commercial satellite companies like GeoEye or DigitalGlobe) are used to take pictures of Earth. These salllites continuously capture high resolution imagery then transmit it to a ground station for processing. The selection of pictures is automated and programmed into the satellite from the ground. Pictures taken by an astronaut could be taken from a hand-held digital camera. The astronaut in that cause manually focuses the camera on a point of interest and takes the picture. One process is automated by machine (with instructions from humans) and the other directly by a human.
The satellite takes pictures of the earth, and sends the photos down by radio, as a digital data-stream. Maybe kind of like the same way you send pictures to your friend's cellphone, you suppose ?
Satellites use the earth's orbit and the earth's gravity to take pictures. The satellites orbit the earth in the same direction that the earth spins. That way the satellites never have to move against the earth's movement to take pictures. There are two kinds of satellites; ones that take pictures that are designed for taking pictures, and ones that are designed for spying. The ones that are designed for spying can magnify what are seeing on earth. Otherwise, the two kinds of satellites work the same way.
