Ford numbers its engines in the following manner: The first cylinder (#1) is located on the passenger side nearest the radiator. Count each cylinder numerically on the passenger side toward the back of the engine starting with #1 (2, 3, 4). The other 4 cylinders are the same on the other site. #5 is the one nearest the radiator and 6, 7, 8 are counted towards the back of the engine.
This method will also work for their six cylinder engines.

Cylinder # 1 is at the front of the engine on the passenger side . On the passenger side of the engine the cylinders are numbered 1 to 4 , from front to back (by firewall) and on the driver's side of the engine the cylinders are numbered 5 to 8 , from front to back ( by firewall )
