There is really no difference between the Malays from Singapore and the Malays from Malaysia. They speak the same form/version of Malay. Unlike Indonesians, they speak the Indonesian form aka "Bahasa Indonesia". Other than being born in Singapore, there is no difference.

Singapore, was like any other colony, left in shambles after the British rule. After merging with Malaysia, Singapore was hoping to tap on Malaysia regional power and natural resources to boost the growth. Singapore has no natural resources at all. The small country will also be vulnerable to attacks because it has no army of its own (or too small if you say). However, Singapore was a moderately developed economy. It served as a trade stop between India and China. Nevertheless, Singapore needed Malaysia for the protection it offered and natural resources it has to develop itself. Hence, if left independent, Singapore needed to solve problems regarding its lack of natural resources, which might greatly impede economic development, and manage its vulnerability to attacks from neighboring nations.
