If moving the mouse or striking a key on the keyboard does not wake the machine up, try pressing the power key. PRESS the power key, don't hold it. With a laptop, try hitting the Fn (function) key only. After waking, you might have to sign-in again with your user password again if that's how you set it up, though any active programs will remain as when you left without data loss.
In any case, what you should do, if this is a recurring issue, is change your power settings so that the machine does not go to sleep in the first place, or at least not after 15 minutes. To do this in XP, right-click on the desktop, and select properties. Click the "screen saver" tab, and click the "Power" button toward the bottom right. Here, you can change the power scheme to better suit your needs and work habits. Many prefer the "Always On" preset, but you can customize it however you like. Just set the "System Standby" to never. Click OK a couple of times, and you're good to go. If the machine continues to "go to sleep", and maybe the power light is flashing orange, it could mean that you have a bad power supply.

One of the best pieces of advice is to save early, save often. It is good practice to also save to media other than the hard drive. If you are working on anything, ALWAYS save before you leave the computer.
