For too long, grasslands have been ignored by conservation efforts. Indeed, there are very few areas of designated wilderness in the grasslands. Grasslands are a place of tremendous plant and animal diversity, susceptible to invasive exotics, and too easily converted to agricultural production.

To protect grasslands, there are several ways to get involved. Contact your local, state, and federal government representatives and tell them how important grasslands conservation is to you. You can also get involved in a number of non-profit organizations that promote grasslands conservation, such as the Nature Conservancy. If you own land in a climate that supports grasslands, you can convert land back to natural grassland (and I believe the U.S. government has programs to give you financial incentive to do so). One precaution to take is that appropriate grasses be used in this practice. Studies have been done to idenitify grasses native to an area, these should be used.

Grasslands require periodic burning to maintain the proper types of plants, so there is some labor involved. Lastly, you could volunteer or work for an organization or agency that deals directly with grasslands conservation including the U.S. National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service in the United States.
