If a tornado warning is issued go the your basement or cellar and crouch down facing a wall with your hands over your head.
If you do not have a basement go to an interior room or hallway as close to the center part of your house as possible. A bathroom often provides good protection. Stay away from windows.

Pay attention to weather bulletins and keep a battery-powered weather radio on hand. If a tornado threatens your area go to you basement and crouch down facing a wall, cover your head. If you do not have a basement go to an interior room or hallway, stay away from windows if it is possible. A bathroom or closet often provides good shelter.

Mobiles homes and vehicles should be abandoned for more substantial shelter.

When a tornado occurs you should gather your family (if you have one) and go to the basement or storm cellar. If you do not have a basement, go to an interior room on the lowest floor of the house, preferably a bathroom. If possible get as many people as you can into the bathtub and put pillows over everyone in the tub.

If you are inside you should really go to a basement or a cellar if you have one. If you don't go to the innermost area of your house away from any windows. if you know where heavy things are in your house, like pianos or refrigerators, stay away form them and in you basement don't be right under them in case the floor decides to give in. where ever you are in a house make sure to cover your head and you neck. your neck contains the most important muscles liking your brain to your spinal chords. if you are outside lay in a field or in a ditch and use your hand to cover you head and neck, but mainly your neck. and if you are in a mobile home, GET OUT! if you neighborhood has a storm shelter go to it otherwise follow the outside directions.

Safety tips during a tornado include:

  • Stay inside at all times if possible!
  • Do not go anywhere near windows.
  • The best place to be is in a basement or storm cellar. Crouch down in a corner facing a wall with your head covered.
  • If you do not have an underground shelter get to the lowest floor and find an interior room
  • The bathroom is a good place, as they normally have the fewest windows and the Plumbing can help reinforce the walls. If possible, take cover in the bathtub.
  • Abandon vehicles and mobile homes and vehicles for sturdier shelter. Nearly half of all deaths from tornadoes occur in trailer homes, which offer little protection.
  • If caught outside with no access to shelter take cover in a ditch.
  • Do not try to outrun the tornado.
  • Do not attempt to open your windows,
  • Do not seek shelter under a bridge.
  • Stay away from tall objects
  • Cover you and your family in blankets in case of flying glass or objects.
  • Avoid being near windows or around any external wall (one that separates the inside from outside).
  • It is a good idea to keep a battery powered radio (with fresh batteries) with you so you know where the tornado might be located and when the threat of a tornado has passed.
  • If you can get one quickly, wearing a bicycle or football helmet can protect you from head injuries.

How far should you be from an F1 tornado?

You should probably stay at least a quarter mile away from any tornado. This keeps you safe from debris and can give you some time to move if the tornado changes direction. Note, however, that you cannot judge the intensity of a tornado based on its appearance. It is a common misconception that a narrow tornado will be weak, when in fact it can be of any intensity. Even an F5 tornado can be skinny.

What should you do if an EF5 tornado is approaching your home?

First, it is impossible to know how exactly strong a tornado is before it hits. But if a strong tornado is approaching you should be in your basement or storm cellar which is the safest place to be. Even if the tornado is an EF5 the portion of it with EF5 winds may still easily miss you.
