How did Andy Griffith become a widower?

In real life Mr. Griffith has been married three times. On the TV show- Sheriff Taylor was a widower. if one looks at the facts and alleged facts- only child, fairly young, never talked much about prior family life ( unusual in real life) it seems to add up we had a ( Roman Candle) Mrs. Taylor (and we never learn her first name or see any pictures) died in childbirth, a most back-country type of health problem- certainly devoid of comedy- but there was a wisecrack in the service comedy No Time for Sergeants- where a battery of Army Psychiatrists kept quizzing the Griffith character about his mother- they couldn"t get any factual answers about her, then, he interjected- Doctor, she died when I was born! this shows the fallacy of standardized tests! Maybe this was carried over.
