Fitzroy River. The Fitzroy River lies in Queensland, Australia. Its catchment covers an area of 142,665 square kilometres, making it the largest river catchment flowing to the eastern coast of Australia. The river is formed by the joining of the Mackenzie and Dawson rivers at Duaringa. The catchment stretches from the Carnarvon Ranges in the west to the rivermouth in Keppel Bay, near Rockhampton. It is bounded to the north by the Burdekin River catchment area and to the south by the Burnett River catchment area. The Fitzroy was named by Charles and William Archer on 4 May 1853 in honour of Sir Charles FitzRoy, Governor of the Colony of New South Wales, as Queensland did not become a separate colony until 1859.
Sir Charles Fitzroy was a 19th Century English aristocrat who was also a military officer and politician, and who served as the Governor of some overseas colonies.Born on 10th June 1796, he was educated at Harrow School for Boys and went on to join the Royal Horse Guards at the age of just 16. He served in the Battle of Waterloo, where he was wounded, later being promoted to the rank of Captain and then Lieutenant-Colonel.He married Lady Mary Lennox, daughter of the Duke of Richmond, at the age of 20, and served as Governor of Prince Edward Island and the Leeward Islands from 1841-45. Following this, he served as Governor-General of New South Wales in Australia for ten years. His wife Mary died in 1847, but he remarried in 1855. The same year his eldest son Augustus was killed in action on 11th September. in the Crimean War whilst serving in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. Sir Charles relinquished his Governorship of New South Wales soon afterwards and returned to England. He died three years later on 16th February 1858, at the age of 61. His second wife Margaret Gordon died soon afterwards. His brother was Vice-Admiral Robert Fitzroy, the famous meteorologist and naval commander who was captain of HMS Beagle, the ship that Charles Darwin travelled to South America on- a trip that led to him developing his famous Theory of Evolution and the publication of The Origin of Species. Robert Fitzroy later went on to become Governor of New Zealand, but committed suicide in 1865 following a long struggle with depression and severe financial difficulties.
Charles Robberts Swart became the first State President of South Africa in 1961 and held this office until 1967. The position he held before that was Governor-General of South Africa.

The first Governor General was Sir Charles FitzRoy, appointed in 1851 fifty years before the Australian colonies became states and federated. This appointment was in parallel to the Port Philip District and Van Diemen's Land being separated from New South Wales under new constitutions, and their Lieutenant Governors being upgraded to Governor. So the Colonial Office thought it appropriate to appoint an overall local Crown representative for them, South Australia and Western Australia (the Moreton Bay District remained part of New South Wales until separation as Queensland in 1859).FitzRoy was Governor of New South Wales, but also theoretically had jurisdiction over other colonies, appointed 'Governor-General in and over all our Colonies of New South Wales, Van Diemen's Land, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia'. He didn't actually use his position as Governor General, as he did not have an Advisory Council, and he declined to be an autocrat. It was suggested to him that he use his New South Wales Advisory Council, but he also decided that it would be unfair to the other colonies to take advice from a group which was not aligned to their needs, and could be competing against them, or even actively hostile to their interests. A man of principle! He carried out a couple of ceremonial visits to Victoria and Tasmania - South Australia and Western Australia being too far to justify a visit of no real purpose. His successor as governor of New South Wales in 1854, Sir William Denison was also appointed as the second Governor General, and similarly declined to do anything on the same grounds. The position lapsed after the colonies were granted representative government in 1855.The first Governor General of the nation of Australia was John Hope, the Earl of Hopetoun, appointed in July 1900, six months before Federation.
Andrew E. Lee (born March 18, 1847 in Bergen, Norway; died March 19, 1934 in Vermillion, South Dakota) succeeded Charles H. Sheldon as the third Governor of South Dakota, serving between January 1, 1897 and January 8, 1901. Following the end of Lee's term as Governor, Charles N. Herreid (born October 20, 1857 in Madison, Wisconsin; died July 6, 1928 in Aberdeen, South Dakota) became the fourth Governor of South Dakota, serving between January 8, 1901 and January 3, 1905.
