The enlightenment ideas came from many different philosophers one of which was john Locke. He believed that people needed government to protect their natural rights to life, liberty and property, but he also believed that self government was possible and if the government failed to protect these natural rights, citizens were allowed to rebel. Britain was not governing the American colonies in this way by deciding on many different taxes and laws that were against the colonists rights. The main leaders and others heard of these enlightenment ideas and decided to do something about it = American revolution.
