David's lust for another man's wife led him into committing adultery - breaking the 7th Command. He also intentionally had her husband killed, in effect breaking the 6th Command. Though David repented deeply and sincerely, God told him the child born out of this illicit union would die - and it did.

David reaped these wages fourfold in four of his children: the unnamed infant, Amnon, Absalom, and Adonijah.
