He won some important victories in Tennessee and Mississippi, ending the war in the West and saving the Army of the Cmberland from starvation in Chattanooga.

After being appointed General-in-Chief in March 1864, his biggst contribution was to end the system of prisoner exchange, so that the Confederates were bound to run out of men first.
