Best Answer

The Bay of Pigs invasion took people from Miami (former citizens of Cuba) and trained them to fight the government in Cuba. This took tax payer dollars to accomplish. They attempted to overthrow Fidel Castro who had just taken power over Cuba. The plan failed because United States military planes missed targets the day before the invasion.

On 17 April,1961 a military group of Cuban dissidents trained and equipped by American CIA tried to invade Cuba from Guatemala. The botched invasion was a failed attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro's government in Cuba that had severed its ties with USA and was getting close to USSR. At that time cold war was in its full bloom and USA could not afford a communist state so close to its border, that is why Bay of Pigs invasion was supported.

The failed invasion strengthened Castro's leadership, plus his ties to the USSR. Hundreds of people were executed in Cuba. It also (eventually) led to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

Until the Bay of the Pigs war, Castro wasn't very strongly influencing Cuba. After this failed war attempt, it strengthened Castros administration and allowed him to adopt the policy of socialism.
