If you were caught with pot depending on variables you received an Article 15 which is an Army type of misdeamor punishment. In my unit checking for pot use was not a high priority item. Doing your job was and if you failed in your job then things got uncomfortable since we all depended on each other. In my unit, the use of alcohol was by far more of a trouble problem than pot. Beer could be bought in the EM club tent every night for 25 cents a beer. There were some fights from excess alcohol use on some occasions. Or maybe it was the Poker games LOL.
communism
Presuming you mean the government supported by the US: The Republic of South Vietnam.
During his term, Eisenhower will greatly increase U.S. military aid to the French in Vietnam to prevent a Communist victory. Or the US feared that Vietnam would vote for a communist government
communist
SOUTH Vietnam was called the "REPUBLIC of South Vietnam." Everyone in those days just called North Vietnam...NORTH VIETNAM.
Discontent with the government.
To prevent South Vietnam from being taken over by communists.
North Vietnam took over South Vietnam shortly after we left and Vietnam became Communist, and still is today!
Had to, US troops=US government.
Before reunification, Vietnam was divided into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam had a Sino-Soviet backed Communist government, while South Vietnam had a Western-backed Democratic government (at least in principle). Prior to the division of North and South Vietnam, it was subject to a French colonial government, whose control of the region was interrupted during WWII, when a Japanese occupational government controlled the region.
The North Vietnamese Government.
Presidents: Eisenhower, Kennedy, LBJ, Nixon, and Ford.
