William the conquerer was trying to invade England from France and he had to come across the channel and land in England from the south, but he had to wait for the wind to change before he could sail across. Harald Hardrada (a viking) was trying to invade England in the north. Harold Godwineson (the English nobleman who had just made himself King after Edward the Confessor died) didn't know what to do. Eventually he decided to march his army up north to fight Harald Hardrada and hope that the wind didn't change in the meantime. He got there just in time and fought the battle of Stanford bridge with Harald Hardrada, and he won. No sooner had he done this than he received word that William had invaded in the south. Then he had to quickly march all his tired troops back down England. His army was severely reduced in numbers after his fight with Harald Hardrada and things weren't looking good. When the time came for the battle Harold's army had the advantage as they were on a hill, but William's army was bigger and they had horses. William's army decided to pretend to run away so that Harold's army would follow them down the hill and break up their defensive formation, and they did this twice to great success. After that the battle really started, and William might not have one if Harold hadn't got shot in the eye and fallen off his horse. One of William's soldiers then killed him and Harold's army knew that they had to surrender. So that's how William conquered England.
