World War II affected people around the world. Many families lost at least one son or daughter due to the fighting. The air raids and gunfire destroyed a lot of Europe. Meanwhile, Russia lost more people to the fighting than any other country.

It eliminated 90% of the world's Jews. The destruction was so enormous (50-100 million killed), painful and tragic, that the countries where the war wreaked most of its destruction now have the highest rates of Atheism in the world. It was probably hard for religions to explain why God would allow this to happen. Europe and Japan now have the highest percentage of non-believers in the world. It was also a lesson about the absolute necessity of eliminating religious bigotry and intolerance.

I suppose WW2 impacted on as many peoples lives, for a substantial period, as anything in history. I don't really know where history was going before WW2 diverted it, so to speak. Few indeed were unaffected by it in one way or another, it was much more of a global conflict than WW1, largely because of the Pacific war as well, at the same time as the European conflict. WW2 accelerated technology in many ways because of military demand, aircraft design being a particular example. But there were few winners, very few emerged better off than before, and many peoples homes & lives were destroyed. Russia emerged in eastern Europe as a dominating force & the cold war would be a feature for many years. Britain came to the end of its Empire days, the Commonwealth became a replacement in terms of diplomatic friendship & co operation. Europe became less important globally than before. The US became the dominant world power, rivalled by the USSR, & the space race was initiated by German technology. (The V2 rocket) WW2 made a dramatic impact on the course of history, in the 20th century it was the greatest upheaval the world had ever seen, one hopes it will be unrivalled in that for all time ! Somehow I suspect that is just wishful thinking..... watch this space !
