World War 1 devastated most of the countries in Europe. There were cities that were destroyed and entire countries that no longer existed.

When the war was over, those countries needed to rebuild. The rebuilding process boosted the European economy by giving jobs to millions of unemployed workers. Supplies needed to be imported for the reconstruction; this strengthened trade. Many of the industries in Europe were producing at full capacity.

In the aftermath of the war, many of the governments saw the need to restructure. The citizens received more rights (in most countries) and many governments began to organize themselves around the model of democracy.
