They did not choose their pharoahs, strictly speaking. Nascent pharoahs mostly indulged in fratricide, and the last one standing became pharoah, broadly speaking. The people had some considerable influence in whether a pharoah remained a pharoah, however.

The first pharaoh was a powerful, rich, warrior, who would have been the son of an important family. He established himself as king. There was nobody to select the ruler, the first king would establish his bloodline as royal.

Pharaoh is the title used for the rulers of Egypt. As with all ancient monarchies and most modern ones, there were three ways of deciding the succession: inheritance, murder, and conquest.

The oldest son, or oldest child was theoretically the next Pharaoh.

But sometimes one brother, or half-brother (the the partisans of one) would poison or stab or otherwise murder the heir apparent to ensure that someone else in the succession took the throne.

And sometimes the next Pharaoh took the throne by conquest. Some Pharaohs, for example, were Nubian, and had lead armies to conquer Egypt. This was also the case with the Hittites.

Ancient Egyptians did not call their kings pharaohs. The term was begun by Greeks and other non-Egyptians but was later adopted by the Egyptians. IT's hard to say when the Egyptians adopted it but a guess would be somewhere after 800 BC.
