The Ancient Egyptians fished from papyrus boats, on the Nile. They used nets, traps, pens and harpoons. The nets, traps and pens were made from woven willow branches, later fishing with rods and fish hooks made of bone were used. They were also one of the earliest cultures to indulge in fishing as a leisure activity.
Most fishing was done with nets or lines fitted with multiple hooks. These hooks were at first made of bone with or without barbs, and later of bronze.
Huge drag-nets were made with floats and weights attached, to be used by teams of men using boats.
