Due to poor economic conditions in Italy, many Italian immigrants migrated to the United States in the 19th century. They settled in ethnic neighborhoods and kept their Italian culture alive. Most were general laborers, not skilled craftsmen and poverty was a way of life. However, due to a strong sense of ethnic pride, strong social networks were available. Unfortunately, there was a lot of anti-Catholic sentiment during this time and some Italian -Americans met with prejudice, violence and even lynching's.

For taking new opportunities in a free land.
Immigrants began new lives in America by getting off the boat and looking for a place to live and work to earn money, or they got off the boat and took a train to where they could begin to farm available land.

I agree with my colleague Colin Peters that, as written, the question is nonsensical. An Italian-American is born in America and can therefore not colonize or immigrate to a country where he already lives. If the question intends to ask where Italians who came to America did so by way of colonization of immigration, it would be IMMIGRATION. I am sure that the Italian immigrants would have preferred to colonize virgin soil, but alas, they came a little late to the party.

It might be said that the United States is a nation of immigrants because for 400-years people from all over the world have come to America looking to start a new life. They came for many different reasons including escaping war-torn countries, freedom of religion, to escape poverty, and others just for a change of scenery.
