Simon Bolivar freed them from Spain in the 1800's. He made the colonies into one big country called the United Columbia, they eventually began their own countries though. However he didn't free one country which was Brazil because they were owned by Portugal. Bolivia is named after Simon Bolivar. He was called the Elliberator
