Modernism moved from art of a highly 'representational' Art into an area of 'nonrepresentational' art. You no longer had to look at a bowl of flowers realistically painted if the artist didn't 'see' the flowers that way. The new way of seeing things broke into many different schools and teaching methods. But they shared in common a breaking of the old ways of seeing and representing images. Some artists worked with a 'flat' representation of images while others tried to capture movement in a single image- One of more famous was NUDE DESCENDING STAIRCASE. Flat school could be seen in some painting by both Gauguin and Cezanne. Another breaker of most boundaries was Modigliani, and his 'boogie woogie' paintings. Art no longer looked like what it was, it became more of an 'interpretation' of what the artist saw in the object. As has been noted, many schools and techniques sprang from this way of painting.
