Don't forget, the main objective of the Nazi's, was to break peoples Spirit, and turn them into closer to an animal state, before killing them. To turn them into Non-persons! So you will see, that it was very hard to survive for even a short time, but some, not many it's true, managed to survive for weeks, months, and the odd one, for a year, or even more. The Human Spirit is very strong in some people.
