The US Navy's CVE's (Carrier, Heavier Than Air, Escort). Also known as Escort Carriers, Jeep Carriers, Baby Carriers, and Baby Flat-Tops. And jokingly referred to by the US sailors that manned them, as "Combustible, Volatile, and Explosive."

WW2 submarines had to surface for air and battery re-charging. When they did, airplanes could find them and destroy them. CVE's were mass produced from merchant ship hulls. CVL's, Light Aircraft Carriers, were built upon US Navy cruiser hulls; and Fleet Carriers were built upon battleship/battlecruiser hulls.

The Fleet and Light Carriers went to the Pacific (for the carrier duels), while a portion of the "Baby Flat-tops" went to kill subs in the Atlantic.

The Royal Navy fought the longest WW2 battle, the battle of the North Atlantic, 1939 to 1945. During this period many innovations were used by RN ships. Hunter-killer groups which operated independently, the hedgehog, the squid, centimetre band radar. RAF coastal command used the Leigh Light to attack U Boats leaving their bases on the surface at night. Sea Hurricanes were used mainly to chase off Luftwaffe Condors shadowing the convoys. I do not think the Allies had won control of the Atlantic in 1943 since that was the year with the heaviest shipping losses.
By using a combination of code breaking, radio direction finding, improved anti-submarine weapons and methods and long range bombers, the allies were able to remove the threat of u-boats and their support vessels.
