The propertied class was faced with loss of property - although their farms were protected while they were serving in the army, the large landoners stole much of the common land on which the small landowners grazed their ploughing ox and gathered fruits, nuts fruit and vegetables.

With the reduction in numbers by the end of the Wars, there were not enough left to face the ensuing Germanic invasions, so the unpropertiedclass had to be recruited. After their military service, these had no farms to return to and looked to their generals to get them land. These generals were then able to call on them to support their own political ambitions, and this power play led to the Civil Wars.

When did Hannibal barca start war?

Carthaginian general, Hannibal, is considered one of the greatest military leaders in history. Rome had come into dominance and was attempting to subjugate all its Mediterrean neighbors. There were two Punic wars. In the first war, Hannibal's father, Hamilcar Barca and his brothers-in-law went down to defeat. Fighting through the northern tribes and with an army that included 20,000 troops and 38 elephants, Hannibal pushed the war to Roman territories in 218 BC with the second Punic War.

What is a plebeian?

The plebeians were the lower class. Nicknamed "plebs", the plebeians included everyone in ancient Rome (except for the nobility, the patricians) from well-to-do tradesmen all the way down to the very poor. However this was only during the beginning of the republic. Over time the Plebeians gained their rights and wealth and also became the nobility. The two groups, Patrician and Plebeian, were the aristocracy, as the majority of people in ancient Rome were immigrants and had no ancestral connection to the founders of the city, as did the Plebeians and Patricians.
