The disaster certainly impacted on the families of the twelve people who were killed. However, a major effect was that the city of Hobart was divided for over two and a half years following the accident. The accident happened on 5 January 1975, and the rebuilding of the replacement bridge was not finished until October 1977. This disrupted commerce and business in the city for some time.
